This morning, PPFA sent Congress a report from three teams of forensic video experts who analyzed the secretly recorded videos of Planned Parenthood staff thoroughly—and found that they were heavily and deceptively edited, and that they significantly distort and misrepresent actual events. In fact, the five videos of Planned Parenthood staff have at least 42 splices where content is cut and edited together to create the appearance of seamless conversations. For example, on one video, a Planned Parenthood staff member in Colorado says 13 separate times that any arrangements related to fetal tissue donation need to be reviewed by attorneys and follow all laws—and all 13 instances are edited out of the video. For further examples, PPFA has put together a fact sheet and blog post summarizing the deceptive video edits.
Along with the report on the videos, PPFA also sent a letter to Congress providing extensive information about the reality of Planned Parenthood’s limited involvement in important fetal tissue research. The letter explains that fetal tissue research is critical for helping develop cures for serious diseases and advancing public health. Planned Parenthood affiliates in just two states—totaling 1% of Planned Parenthood’s clinics nationwide—currently offer tissue donation as an option for women who want it. The letter also details how PPFA’s guidelines for fetal tissue donation go far above and beyond the legal requirements, and that despite the fraudulent smear campaign, there is no evidence and no indication that Planned Parenthood has violated any laws or medical standards.
The letter and report submitted this morning are part of our continued effort to provide full and accurate information, as well as our ongoing strategy to discredit these attacks and the extremists making them. Our efforts are working: despite four ongoing Congressional investigations into Planned Parenthood, five states have concluded investigations into Planned Parenthood that found absolutely no wrongdoing. In two states, lawmakers have also called for investigations of the Center for Medical Progress. And last month, a bill to defund Planned Parenthood and block millions of women from having access to health care failed to pass in the U.S. Senate. Along with these successes, four recent national polls show that the American public continues to hold Planned Parenthood in high esteem and disagree with the Republican push to defund our clinics.
We know that this battle will continue through the coming months, but we’re bolstered by today’s actions and by the solidarity of our supporters in our region and across the country. All of us can stand proudly knowing that Planned Parenthood is following the highest ethical and legal standards and serving a vital role in our communities. I’m grateful to all of you for the critical part you play in our work, each and every day.
